Ingrid Abramovitch is a journalist who writes about design and architecture. She grew up in Montreal, Canada, where she fell in love with the distinct and unusual Victorian row houses of the Plateau Mont Royal neighborhood–two and three-story duplexes with unusual outdoor spiral staircases.

Ingrid earned a B.A. at McGill University before heading to Manhattan to attend the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. She returned to Montreal to work as a reporter for the Montreal Gazette and Canadian Press wire service, reporting on everything from Québecois separatism to the Montreal film festival.

Always passionate about design and décor, Ingrid returned to New York and became a shelter magazine editor. She worked at Martha Stewart Living as a senior editor and writer, followed by the late great Condé Nast House & Garden, where she worked for ten years, and where her last job title was Deputy Features Director. She is now a senior editor at Artisan Books in New York, and a contributor to numerous publications, including the New York Times, Elle Décor, Cookie, the Wall Street Journal, and Departures.

Ingrid was inspired to write Restoring a House in the City after moving with her family to Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn, an Italian-American neighborhood filled with brownstones and home-made pasta and mozzarella shops. Surrounded by house-proud friends and neighbors, she set out to create a book that would offer stylish solutions for town house living while also providing solid practical information.

She continues to live in Carroll Gardens where she and her husband, Joel Simon, and their two daughters, Ruby and Lola, are lucky enough to occupy the bottom two floors of an Italianate townhouse built in the 1880s.
